Dynamic Fitness’ 20-Year Evolution

In the 20 years since Dynamic Fitness first opened its doors (yes, you read that right — how the time flies!), we estimate about 1,500 clients have come through our doors in search of a path to holistic fitness through Pilates. Since we were Sarasota’s original classical Pilates studio, we like to believe that we had a hand in bringing awareness to the local community about the immense, transformative benefits of Pilates practice. A lot can change in 20 years, and it’s been fascinating to watch our studio “family” evolve.

One of the most dramatic changes has been the number of men who are regulars at our studio. We used to have maybe one or two male trainees per week. These days our client roster includes 13 men. Some of them attend class twice a week and one actually loves Pilates so much, we see him three times! Five of the men have wives who are also Dynamic Fitness regulars, and there are two couples who train together. We love to see them motivating and supporting each other through their workouts.

Our male clients prefer the one-on-one sessions with our trainers, but we do have two men who participate in our group reformer classes as well. What they all have in common is that they’re very smart guys. They recognize the intelligence built into the Pilates method (which, as you may know, was created by a man). They’re also of an age group that recognizes the need to seek out exercise that promotes longevity and doesn’t put them at risk of injury, like many popular workouts that are very “boot camp”-oriented in content. These men study the art of a well-rounded lifestyle. And it doesn’t hurt that the newfound strength, flexibility, and balance from Pilates does wonders for their golf and tennis games!

What about the women? For the most part, our female clientele has retained the same profile. In line with Sarasota’s general age demographic, we tend to have a more middle-aged group for both men and women, but lately we’ve been seeing a brand new profile in group classes that are comprised of young moms. These women are friends who enjoy being together to work out and support each other in both family and fitness. In our blog we’ve discussed Pilates’ enormous benefits for mothers (see “New Moms Find an Ideal Workout in Pilates,” https://www.pilates-sarasota.com/blog/postnatal-pilates/) and it makes us so happy to see the proof right in our studio!

To sum up 20 happy years of providing authentic Pilates to Dynamic Fitness clients in one word, we’d need to invent another word. In the meantime we want to say thank you to all the clients who have worked toward their best bodies with us at our studio, and we look forward to meeting and shaping Pilates’ next generation.

Pilates: Spotted on the Red Carpet! The global Pilates fan base is like a galaxy -- it's incredibly vast and full of stars! In past blogs we've mentioned professional athletes who include Pilates as an important part of their training regimen (see "Pilates Works for Pro Athletes," www.pilates-sarasota.com/blog/Pilates-for-Professional-Athletes/). It's not surprising that Pilates is popular among stars of the silver screen as well! If you caught the Oscars last month, you may not have realized it, but you were looking at the gorgeous results of Pilates training. Best Actress Julianne Moore and Best Supporting Actress Patricia Arquette both include Pilates in their fitness routines according to celebrity Pilates blogger Chris Hunt, who says, "I always hope that by promoting Pilates using the successful celebrities that use it and swear by it, we can inspire other people to try out our beloved system."We're right there with you, Chris! In the spirit of putting faces you know on the fitness method you love, these are some other stars who swear by Pilates. Guess what else they have in common? They're all past their 40th birthdays!Sandra Bullock - InStyle's review of celebrity workout routines revealed that the celebrated actress relies on Pilates to prepare for big parts such as her starring role in The Proposal, in which she needed to look super strong but super feminine as well.Cameron Diaz - In a cover shoot for Esquire, the girl next door told (and showed) readers how comfortable she felt in her own skin, saying, "I know myself better. I feel more capable than ever. And as far as the physicality of it, I feel better at 40 than I did at 25.'" She named regular Pilates exercise as one of her secrets for staying toned and feeling her best yet.Chelsea Handler - True to the wry, raw honesty for which Handler is famous, the comedienne opened up to Shape magazine about her struggle to find a healthy lifestyle path that she could stick to. "I was a fitness fiasco -- until I found Pilates," she said in an interview. "I'm longer and leaner and much more graceful. I can honestly say it's changed my body -- and my life."Gwen Stefani - ETonline called the platinum-haired frontwoman of No Doubt "one of the hottest bodies in music," reporting that she added Pilates to her workout regimen after she hit her forties. She turns 46 this year and is still rocking out.Vanessa Williams - "I was doing Pilates before people even knew how to spell Pilates," the singer/actress said in an interview with Prevention magazine. "I started with Mari Winsor after my first child, 22 years ago. She used to come backstage and do a mat floor workout with me when I was doing Kiss of the Spider Woman on Broadway. Core strength balances your entire body. It pulls your shoulders back, tucks in your pelvis, makes you walk straighter, and gives you great posture."More testaments to the benefits of Pilates come from the likes of Lucy Liu, Jennifer Aniston, Sigourney Weaver, Lucy Lawless, and Penelope Cruz. And the celebs singing Pilates' praises aren't limited to women; sources say that Hugh Grant, Tiger Woods, and even Mick Jagger work on that "scoop" to stay on top of their game! Many stars of stage and screen are drawn to Pilates for the same reasons you are: The fully integrated and maximally effective workout suits busy schedules and produces visible results fast, helping you get in shape and stay in shape. Ever hear of "red carpet arms?" Since Pilates incorporates the whole body, it helps to sculpt the "long and lean" physique that's beloved by the camera and coveted by glossy magazine readers everywhere. That's about where the similarities end. You'll rarely see machines like these at even the most modern gym, and that's because the founder of Pilates developed many of them specifically for his exercise method. Getting acquainted with them will transform the way you work out.Reformer - The Reformer was developed and designed by Joseph Pilates himself, and was one of the first exercise machines that he successfully patented back in the 1930s. Many reformer exercises are performed supine (lying on the back), which eases any strain on the joints and allows students to practice aligning the body. The Reformer is truly the centerpiece of the classical Pilates studio, and Dynamic Fitness hosts several group classes per week dedicated to this integral apparatus.Cadillac - When you visit our studio, the first thing to catch your eye may not be the long, low Reformer. It'll probably be the Cadillac that you spot first -- and wonder what on earth is that?? The Cadillac resembles the frame of a tall, four-poster bed, rigged with springs, slings, push-through bars, and even a trapeze! In the Cadillac we can clearly see where Pilates first developed his fitness method: in the British internment camps of WWI, where he modified his fellow Germans' hospital beds so even the most sickly and injured could exercise and, to borrow from the inventor, "return to life." Electric Chair - The Electric Chair can look a little scary with its high back, shoulder-height handles, and moveable foot bar attached to heavy springs. However, the purpose of the Electric or "High" Chair is quite therapeutic. As the high back supports the spine during seated exercises, you become the source of "electricity" as you focus energy in your powerhouse and shoot it out through your legs.Wunda Chair - The history of this apparatus is pretty fascinating. Throughout his career, Joe Pilates was obsessed with the idea of creating a line of "exercise furniture," modular pieces that could save space in posh New York apartments by doubling as workout machines. Along with the Reformer, the Wunda Chair is one of the few apparatus from the line of "Pilates Automatic Balanced Health Furniture" that's in popular use today. One minute it's a chic little chair -- the next, it's a sturdy support for the Push-Down, Pull-Up, Swan, and a host of other exercises.Magic Circle - Pilates's dedication to health and wellness are legendary; his love of good beer is the stuff of legend as well. The late Pilates elder Romana Kryzanowska suggested that his sudsy fondness led to the development of the Magic Circle. The springy hoop that we use to enhance leg and arm exercises may have been inspired from the metal hoops encircling the kegs of Pilates' favorite brew. And the Half-Barrel? Yeah, we think you get it, too!Jump Board - The Jump Board is not one of Pilates' original inventions; it was actually prototyped in the late '80s by NASA scientists to simulate the effects of weightlessness on astronauts-in-training. However, from its beginnings the Pilates method has been profoundly popular among professional dancers and gymnasts. For these athletes, practicing and strengthening their jump is a critical exercise. The original manufacturer of Pilates equipment, Gratz Design, modified NASA's prototype to fit the Reformer, and the Jump Board was born.Jump Board exercises are performed supine on the reformer, and they're a great way to add extra cardio to your routine and end a workout on an exhilarating high note!Come see these fascinating machines in person at the Dynamic Fitness studio, and talk to your instructor if you are interested in adding any of the classical Pilates apparatus to your workout routine.Sources"The Father of Invention" by Regina Joseph.
